Predominantly, it is seen in the developed countries such as the UK, US, New Zealand and Australia. Over the years many such Legionella outbreaks have occurred worldwide. After multiple studies, a Central Disease Control (CDC) laboratory scientist finally discovered the etiological agent as Legionella pneumophila and the disease eventually came to be known as Legionnaire’s disease.
The pedestrians walking past this unit were affected as they breathed in the aerosols. Initially it was speculated to be a terrorist attack, but careful investigations confirmed the root cause to be a hotel cooling tower and the air conditioning unit situated near it. By August, over 221 individuals were affected with this disease, with 34 deaths. A day after this convention some of the members started to fall ill with pneumonia like symptoms. Over 600 Legionnaires were staying at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel, which was considered one of the best lodgings in the city. The story of Legionella outbreak dates back to July 1976, when in Philadelphia, about 4000 members of the Pennsylvania State American Legion, a World War II military organization of veterans, were gathered together, in order to participate in Legion’s 58th annual convention. This tiny flagellated bacteria can wreak havoc and has done so many times in the past. What we do not know is that these very luxurious places can also be a thriving hub for a lethal monster called “ Legionella”. We all love a vacation, rejuvenating in the Jacuzzis, hot pools, spas and other luxuries offered by the hotels and resorts.
